1976-1985: Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.

Ian started his first waste collection business working from a shed located on a property in Junortoun, a suburb of Bendigo, Victoria. His first truck was a Leyland which was loaded by hand. In 1978 a customer approached Ian regarding a new technology which was able to empty bins via an overhead lifting system. The customer indicated he was keen to change to this new method of waste disposal. Ian advised the customer he to was incorporating this type of system into his business. Seeing the potential and with his ‘can do’ attitude Ian then hand built his first front lift body.

1986-1995: The road to success is always under construction.

Through hard work, excellent customer service and competitive rates Grundy’s Industrial and Trade Waste had grown it’s fleet to 25 vehicles with a service area covering much of north western Victoria. The business now offered front lift, rear lift, bulk and liquid services to both local government and commercial customers. This attracted attention from larger waste management operators and in late 1986 Grundy’s Industrial and Trade Waste was sold to Cleanaway. Ian continued working in the business for the next 10 years moving to Sydney in 1988.

1996-2014: A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.

Just as Ian had done 20 years earlier, in September 1996 he and wife Paula started a new business, Grundy’s Waste, from a shed in Mulgoa, Sydney. With one customer, a Mitsubishi hook lift and excellent customer service, the business grew quickly, so quickly in fact, by 1998 Ian and Paula had to relocate the business to a larger yard at Lee Holm Rd, St Marys. The business was now providing front lift, rear lift, bulk and liquid services.

2015-Current: Chase the vision - Waste Management Today

With a fleet of more than 25 vehicles, a larger depot was again required with improved workshop and office facilities. In mid-2015 a large site at 74 Links Rd, St Marys was sourced to cater for the continuing growth of the business. It has been an exciting journey since 1996 with five of the six Grundy children working in the business at some point in their careers. Danica is still actively involved in the day to day operations of the business. We still have our very first customer with us for over 20 years who continues to receive our excellent service.
